NIHR Attends a Trial Hearing

23 May 2023

Based upon the broad mandate granted to the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) in the field of protecting and promoting human rights, and the jurisdiction granted to it under the provisions of its Establishment Law, the NIHR has attended two trial hearings for the defendant K. R. in the crime of embezzlement, waste and destruction of equipment, before the third minor criminal court, to find out about the course of the trial and to monitor possible violations of one of the litigants’ rights within the framework of a fair trial in accordance with what is stated in international standards and national legislation related to human rights.

The NIHR found no suspicion of a legal violation related to prejudice or violation of the right to fair trial guarantees, as all parties, the defendant’s lawyer and the civil plaintiff were heard and allowed to present their requests and defenses, and the judge was cooperative and balanced in giving each party sufficient time to present their defence.

The NIHR states that the purpose of its attendance at trial hearings is to review and verify the validity of judicial procedures and provide fair trial guarantees in the trial of the defendant.

The NIHR can be contacted via the toll-free hotline (80001144), "NIHR Bahrain" smartphone application or the website www.nihr.org.bh.
